Residency can be obtained in the UK through participation in the investor programs put forward by the government. The visa programs developed are designated to powering the country’s economy with foreign capital. Individual investors and their family can then secure residence permit in fulfilling the program requirements.

The Innovator Visa and Start-up Visa have replaced the Tier 1 UK Entrepreneur Visa since 2019, imposing additional requirements on investors who would like to build innovative businesses in the UK. Alternatively, Tier 1 Investor Visa is possible for investors with high net worth.

Investment Options
Start-up Visa

High potential, early stage entrepreneurs who want to set up a business in the UK may go for a start-up visa, if the business idea is proved to be new, innovative and has a potential for growth. There is no minimum investment requirement for the application of this visa, provided that other eligibility requirements are met. The business idea has to be assessed by an approved body for endorsement.

Applicants can then stay in the UK for 2 years on a start-up visa, with no extension granted upon visa expiry. Nevertheless, the applicant can switch to Innovator Visa after 2 years.

Innovator Visa

For more experienced entrepreneurs, they may choose to acquire an Innovator Visa instead. A minimum investment of £50,000 is required for entrepreneurs who want to set up a new business. Whereas no investment funds are required if business is already established and endorsed previously. The business idea should also be assessed and endorsed.
The innovator visa will be valid for a period of 3 years, extension is possible upon expiry with no limit on the number of extensions.

Tier 1 Investor Visa

Investors seeking a residency visa in the UK can consider the Tier 1 Investor Visa. A minimum investment of £2,000,000 is required to be eligible for the visa. The fund must be held in at least one of the UK-regulated financial institutions and should be free to spend in the UK.

Applicants holding the visa can stay in the UK for a maximum period of 3 years and 4 months. Extension of visa is possible for another 2 years subject to fulfillment of the requirements continuously.

All application processes will take around 3 weeks to complete, after which the relevant visa will be issued. Given there is no direct citizenship-by-investment programme in the UK, investors seeking permanent residence may want to apply for settlement (“indefinite leave to remain”) after 5 years and British citizenship after 6 years
